By age — what your child can do
There's no universal "right age" — it depends on the child. Concrete recommendations based on pedagogy + platform experience.
ages 6-7 (preschool)
Cleo 🦊 A1German alphabet (30 letters), 100-200 basic words (animals, food, colors, family), numbers 1-20, greetings (Hallo! Tschüss! Wie heißt du?), short songs. 10 min/day with parent alongside.
ages 8-10 (grades 1-4)
Cleo → Sophie 🐱 A2Present-tense verbs (sein, haben, first 30 regular verbs), der/die/das articles, SVO sentences + W-questions, first 10 illustrated stories, short dialogues. 15 min/day, growing autonomy.
ages 11-12 (grades 5-6)
Sophie + Bruno 🐻 B1All cases (Nominativ, Akkusativ, Dativ), Perfekt + first Präteritum, modal verbs, adjectives + comparative, short compositions — aligned to CEFR level A2, the framework official exams also use. 20-25 min/day.
ages 13-14 (grades 7-8)

A parent’s approval for a child’s account
Explicit parental consent at registration (under 13-16, depending on the country). Child data can be deleted anytime. We never collect sensitive data.
Zero ads, zero retargeting
Business model is 100% subscription — precisely so we're not tempted to monetize children's attention. PostHog analytics and Sentry monitoring, both EU-hosted; no session recordings. Moderated, violence-free content
Every story, exercise, dialogue passes through an internal scanner (5 categories) + human review before publishing. No violence, sex, political ideology, or controversial religion.
Daily time limit
Parents set a daily limit. At the limit, lessons, games and stories lock until the next day, and the child cannot unlock them alone; the dashboard, profile and parent panel stay open. The streak doesn't break if the child did today's session.

Frequently asked parent questions
From what age can my child use Deutsch-Landia?+
We recommend age 6 as a minimum, with parent presence at first sessions. Below 6, reading-writing stability isn't sufficient for full benefit. Above 14, the platform keeps going with them — teenagers and adults use it too.
How much time per day is recommended for German learning?+
We recommend: ages 6-7 — 10 minutes/day (never over 15); ages 8-10 — 15 minutes/day, 5 days/week; ages 11-12 — 20-25 minutes/day; ages 13-14 — 30 minutes/day or 2 sessions of 15 minutes each. Consistency matters more than duration.
Does the parent need to sit alongside the child?+
At ages 6-7, yes, for the first 2-3 weeks, then gradual autonomy. At age 8+, the child can work alone but check the dashboard weekly. Parent involvement boosts retention by 40-60%.
Does Deutsch-Landia work on phone, tablet, laptop?+
Yes, on all devices: it runs in the browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) on any screen size. Tablet is the best experience. Phone works but we recommend short sessions (under 15 minutes). There are no native iOS/Android apps yet; the web app can be installed on your home screen (PWA).
How do I choose the right German plan for my child?+
One child — the Student Premium plan. For up to 3 children — the Family plan. For a whole class or more, write to us for a custom offer. You will always find the current prices on the Subscriptions page, and you can cancel a subscription anytime from the same page.
Is Deutsch-Landia safe for my child (COPPA, GDPR)?+
Here is what the platform does for a child’s account. Below the digital-consent age of their country (16 in Romania), the account opens only after a parent approves it by email. The database is hosted in the EU (Railway, Amsterdam), and the child’s data is never sold and never used for advertising profiling. There is no chat between users. Zero ads, zero behavioral retargeting.
How do I monitor my child's German learning progress?+
From the parent dashboard, available anytime. Its weekly report shows, for the last 7 days, how many lessons your child completed, how many grammar exercises they solved, how many words they mastered, the XP they earned and their current day streak.
How long until my child reaches A1 in German?+
With 15 minutes per day, 6-9 months for stable A1 (reading + writing + listening). Full A2 in approximately 18-24 months. B1 in 3-4 years. These durations are averages — passionate kids progress faster; school-only kids slower.
Can I change my subscription plan at any time?+
You manage an active subscription from the billing portal, which you open on the Subscriptions page. You can cancel it anytime, right on the Subscriptions page: you keep your access until the end of the paid period, and the subscription does not renew.
What if my child doesn't want to continue learning German?+
First step: pause 1-2 weeks without guilt. Then ask the child what they didn't like — most often pace too fast, age-mismatched mascot, or boring context. Change the level, mascot, try games instead of lessons. The child has all the time.
