Why a 1,002-question bank?
A fixed test gives everyone the same questions, whatever their level. Here, the 24 you get are chosen from 1,002, spread across all six CEFR levels, according to how you answer. Each question's difficulty is set by its authors, not measured statistically from candidates' answers.

Multi-Stage Testing — adaptive testing in 3 stages
Adaptive testing is used, in far more elaborate forms, by exams such as the GRE (ETS), the GMAT, Cambridge Linguaskill and the Duolingo English Test. Ours is its simplest form: Multi-Stage Testing, 3 stages of 8 questions.
Stage 1 — Starting point
You get 8 questions from levels A1-A2. From your answers, the test makes a first estimate of your level.
Stage 2 — Adjusting
You get another 8 questions, drawn from the estimated level and its neighbours — one level below and one above. Your answers move the estimate.
Stage 3 — Result
The last 8 questions are chosen the same way, around the updated estimate. Then the test ends and shows your indicative level — there are no additional rounds.
Honesty note: an indicative result, NOT a certificate
The test gives you an indicative CEFR level, not a certificate. Question difficulty is set by the authors rather than estimated statistically from answers, and the result has not been compared against an official exam — which is why we promise no margin of error against one. It is most dependable at the beginner levels; at C1 and C2, treat it as a rough estimate. If you need a language certificate for a visa, studies or work in DE/AT/CH, it comes from an official exam — Goethe-Zertifikat, telc, ÖSD or TestDaF — taken at an accredited institution. Use our test for self-assessment and to know where to start the lessons.
Who is this test for?
From kids starting German to professionals relocating abroad. The test adapts as you answer, moving up or down in difficulty until it finds your level.
Children 6-12
Friendly mascots (Cleo the fox at A1, Sophie the cat at A2) and simplified instructions. Parents are welcome alongside — no ads and no ad tracking.
Teens 13-18
For high schoolers learning German at school or preparing for school-leaving exams such as the Romanian Bac. Tells you if you're where you'd expect (B1 after 4 years is typical) before an official exam.
Young professionals — relocation to DE/AT/CH
Language requirements for visas, family reunification or professional recognition differ by country and by profession — always check them with the official authority. The test gives you a realistic starting point before you sign up for an exam.
Nurses, au pairs, Erzieher
Professional recognition in DE/AT usually requires an official language certificate, and the level and the exam differ by profession and by region. Our test does not replace that exam: it shows you where you are starting from.
Adults learning as a hobby
Studying German for travel, Netflix, or pure passion? The test shows whether your progress is real and which level to continue from.
Teachers and schools (B2B)
Teachers can use the test at the start of the school year as a starting point for grouping students by level. Aggregated class reports are still in development.

How long does the Deutsch-Landia German placement test take?+
About 10 minutes: 24 questions, in 3 stages of 8. The number of questions does not change with your answers; the time depends only on how quickly you read and answer.
Is the Deutsch-Landia German placement test free?+
Yes, 100% free, no credit card and no hidden trial. You create a free account in about 30 seconds and the test starts right after — that way your result is saved to your account automatically.
How accurate is the test compared to the official Goethe exam?+
Our items are levelled against the CEFR bands (Companion Volume 2020) — the same framework Goethe-Institut works from. The result is indicative: it tells you which CEFR band you land in, not a score comparable digit for digit with an official exam. We have not yet run a correspondence study against Goethe scores, so we do not promise you a margin of error against them. Don't use it as a substitute for official certification — for visas or studies you need Goethe-Zertifikat, telc, ÖSD or Test-DaF from an accredited institution.
Can I retake the placement test?+
Yes, anytime. Your account level updates automatically after each retest. We recommend a retest every 3-6 months of active study to measure real progress.
Do I need to register before taking the test?+
Yes — you create a free account before the test (takes about 30 seconds: email + password or your Google account, no card). That way your result is saved automatically and you can measure your progress on every retest.
What do I do with the test result?+
The results page shows your indicative CEFR level and a percentage for each skill you received at least 5 questions in (Grammatik, Wortschatz, Lesen); for a skill with fewer, the result tells you there were too few questions for a score. The level is saved to your account, and the lessons use it as your starting point. It is an indicative result, not a certificate — do not use it on a CV or in official applications.
Does the German placement test work on mobile?+
Yes, mobile-first. The test runs smoothly on iPhone, Android and tablets — every item is text, so you need neither sound nor headphones.
What is the minimum age to take the German placement test?+
From age 6, with a parent alongside. Below the digital age of consent in your country — 16 in Romania, 13 in the US, between 13 and 16 across the EU — the account only activates once a parent approves it from their own email. For 6-12 year olds we have friendly mascots and simplified instructions.
