How the rule begins
The Konjunktiv II is not only at home in conditional sentences. It also turns up in konzessiven Strukturen, which describe the outcome of an action despite the stated condition, and in adversativen Strukturen, which highlight a contrast between what someone actually did and what they ought to have done.
