Konjunktiv I — Modalverben in indirekter Rede
Subjunctive I — Modal Verbs in Indirect Speech
Konjunktiv I forms of all modal verbs and their use in indirect speech, including passive structures and contrast with Konjunktiv II.
How the rule begins
In indirect speech (indirekten Rede) we use the Konjunktiv I to report what someone else has said — without signalling whether we consider the statement true or false. Modal verbs (Modalverben) follow special rules, because their Konjunktiv I forms are clearly distinguishable from the indicative form (Indikativform) in almost every person.
