How the rule begins
German follows a simple principle for the Zeitformen in reported speech: there are only three time frames in reported speech — Gegenwart (K1 Präsens), Vergangenheit (K1 Perfekt) and Zukunft (K1 Futur). The tense system is therefore considerably simpler than in direct speech.
