Konjunktiv I — Bildung und Grundformen
Subjunctive I — Formation and Basic Forms
Subjunctive I is formed from the infinitive stem and is the mood specific to indirect speech in formal German.
How the rule begins
The Konjunktiv I is a verb mood in its own right in German — not a tense, but a grammatical category of statement (Modus). It signals that the speaker is merely reporting a statement, without judging it to be personally true or false. The Konjunktiv I is the hallmark of indirekten Rede in formal texts: newspaper reports, academic papers, official statements and legal documents.
