How the rule begins

Degree particles are little words that modify the intensity of adjectives and adverbs, showing wie sehr a characteristic applies. They are exactly the same in function as English "very", "quite", "a bit", "too" and "almost". Without them, your German would sound flat and robotic — with them, it sounds nuanced and human.
