How the rule begins
Thomas the Tiger knows that in advanced German it is not enough to say aber for everything that expresses contrast or concession. At B2 level you have to distinguish between adversatives (direct contrast) and concessives (something that happens against an expectation), and to choose the right connector according to its position in the sentence and its stylistic register.
